Choose a still from your camera or phone recording
MOV files often come from phones, cameras and editing workflows. This page helps you keep a usable moment from a compatible recording without sending it to an upload service. Open the file, inspect its preview and capture the expression, object or movement you want. The still follows the decoded orientation and dimensions shown by the browser. Check the resolution badge rather than assuming that a camera model always records at one size.
MOV compatibility depends on what is inside
QuickTime MOV is a container that can hold different codecs. Browser support for H.264, HEVC, ProRes and other formats differs across devices. A professional editing format may be readable by your desktop editor but unavailable to a browser. If your file fails to load, create an H.264 MP4 working copy in that editor. Open it in the MP4 workflow and keep the MOV original for future editing; renaming the extension does not convert its codec.
Keep an editing-friendly master image
Choose PNG when you want to crop, annotate or compare several candidate stills. It avoids a further lossy image encode but does not turn already-compressed video into raw camera data. A browser capture may not preserve HDR, wide-gamut color or editing metadata. Compare skin tones and highlights with your editor before using a still in work where color accuracy matters. Use a short capture range to keep the gallery manageable.
Start with a short test
- Choose a compatible local video and wait for a playable preview.
- Capture one useful moment, or select a short range and interval.
- Compare the actual subject, then download an image or gallery ZIP.
The workspace accepts sources up to 2 GB and 8.3 million decoded pixels per frame. A gallery holds up to 120 images or 96 MB. Seeking depends on the browser and source timing. Keep the source, use media you have permission to process, and check a small output before starting a larger batch.
Questions for this workflow
Will this read ProRes MOV files?
Only if your browser can decode the source. ProRes support is not established for this release; use an editor to make a compatible copy.
Why does my MOV screenshot look different from the editor?
HDR, color management and the browser decoding path can differ. Use your editor for a color-managed export when exact matching matters.
